Tampa Museum of Art Begins Expansion, Ushering in a New Era for Downtown’s Cultural Core

Renderings of Tampa Museum of Art expansion

This fall, one of Tampa’s most iconic cultural institutions takes a bold step into the future. The Tampa Museum of Art is officially launching construction on its long-awaited Centennial Expansion, a transformative project that will double the museum’s footprint and reimagine how art and community come together along the Riverwalk.

Early site work begins in August, with full-scale construction starting later this year and a groundbreaking celebration scheduled for October 2025.

“This marks an important milestone in our Centennial Expansion,” said Michael Tomor, the Penny and Jeff Vinik Executive Director of the museum. “We’re preparing to break ground on a space that reflects Tampa’s growing passion for the arts and creates more room for immersive, accessible cultural experiences.”

The new cultural hub

Originally announced in 2021, the 77,904-square-foot expansion will turn the museum into a world-class destination for exhibitions, education, and events. Designed by the acclaimed New York firm WEISS/MANFREDI, the new structure will stretch like a crystalline pier toward the Hillsborough River. It will integrate seamlessly with the downtown waterfront.

New features will include:

  • A 150-seat auditorium for talks, performances, and film
  • An inviting art lounge and expanded gallery spaces
  • A rooftop terrace and outdoor sculpture garden
  • Enhanced food and beverage offerings
  • A large multipurpose event space for community gatherings

The expansion is being managed by The Beck Group, with funding led by the museum’s Centennial Campaign. So far, the campaign has raised over $100 million from a combination of public and private sources, including the City of Tampa, Hillsborough County, and the State of Florida.

The effort is anchored by a landmark $28 million donation from developer and philanthropist Dick Corbett, the largest private gift ever made to a public art museum in Florida. “Our Centennial Campaign has focused solely on the future of the Museum in service to the Tampa Bay community,” said Campaign Chairwoman Cornelia Corbett. “Breaking ground brings us one step closer to that future.”

Look out for construction changes

Though early phases of construction include the relocation of the nearby Tampa Dog Run to accommodate the museum’s expanded footprint. No interruption to public access along the Riverwalk, Curtis Hixon Park, or city services is expected. In fact, the project’s design includes new green spaces and cultural touchpoints that aim to enhance the entire downtown experience.

As Tampa continues to grow and evolve, the Centennial Expansion promises to position the Tampa Museum of Art not just as a hub for visual art, but as a dynamic center for civic life, creativity, and connection.
