Tom Hochhausler Steps In to Lead Tampa Museum of Art at a Pivotal Moment

In a moment of transition and momentum for Tampa’s cultural landscape, the Tampa Museum of Art has named Tom Hochhausler as its Penny and Jeff Vinik Interim Executive Director—placing a familiar and trusted leader at the helm during a critical period of growth.

A longtime board member and business leader, Hochhausler now steps into a role that will help guide one of the city’s most important cultural institutions as it continues a national search for its next permanent executive director.

A Leader with Deep Roots in the Museum

Hochhausler’s connection to the museum runs deep. Since joining the Board of Directors in 2016, he has been a steady presence behind the scenes, helping shape strategy and support long-term planning.

“Tom has dedicated years of his time and energy to this institution, and his commitment to the Museum’s success is beyond question,” said Ron Christaldi, Chair of the Board of Trustees. “His record of strong business acumen, combined with his deep firsthand knowledge of the Museum, makes him uniquely suited to lead us through this transition.”

Beyond his work with the museum, Hochhausler brings decades of experience from Deloitte, where he helped organizations navigate growth and change—skills that will be key as the museum moves through its next phase.

A Personal Commitment to Tampa’s Arts Community

For Hochhausler, this isn’t just a professional assignment—it’s personal.

“This Museum has been a part of my life for many years, and I care deeply about its future,” he said. “I am honored to serve in this capacity and look forward to working alongside our talented staff and board to keep the momentum going as we search for the next leader of this remarkable institution.”

He takes on the interim role following the retirement of Michael Tomor, whose more than decade-long tenure helped elevate the museum’s profile and launch its ambitious Centennial Campaign.

Growth, Investment, and a Vision for the Future

Hochhausler’s appointment comes at a transformative time. The museum is in the midst of a sweeping expansion effort that will add 51,000 square feet to its footprint along the Tampa Riverwalk, reinforcing its role as a cultural anchor in the city’s urban core.

The Centennial Campaign has already secured more than $100 million in support from a mix of public and private partners. A $28 million lead gift from Dick Corbett—the largest private donation ever made to a public art museum in Florida—helped set the pace.

Support from the City of Tampa, Hillsborough County, and the State of Florida continues to drive the project forward, highlighting the region’s commitment to arts and culture as part of its broader economic growth.

Steady Leadership During a Defining Chapter

As the search for a permanent executive director continues, Tom Hochhausler’s leadership offers stability and continuity at a time when the museum—and Tampa itself—are evolving rapidly.

His appointment signals more than just a temporary change at the top. It reflects a broader story about community leadership, strategic growth, and the role cultural institutions play in shaping the identity of a city on the rise.
