Esports are quickly becoming the biggest trend in gaming, as the COVID-19 pandemic forced many young generations inside with no outlet to enjoy face-to-face time with friends. These multiplayer video games simulate both traditional and gaming-specific sports, and are one of the most popular ways for teens and young adults to socialize in the ever-increasingly tech-driven world. Now, at two Tampa Parks & Recreation Centers, they can enjoy playing esports together in the newly built Esports lounges.
Both the Northdale Park & Recreation Center and Emanuel P. Johnson Recreation Center have recently added esports lounges for visitors to sit back, relax, and play. Each lounge features murals from local artists, Next-Gen gaming consoles, and thrilling experiences for gamers.

While traditional parks & rec centers focus on physical activity, these esports lounges allow everyone to play, even those with disabilities or those who have not been traditionally comfortable in the sports arena. Northdale has an Inclusion Program for children with disabilities and believes this addition is a great way to dissolve barriers and allow kids to connect in a way that is universally fun and mentally stimulating.
Each Esports Lounge has six 65-inch televisions, Nextgen consoles (Xbox Series S, PS5, Nintendo Switch), and gaming chairs and furniture. Games include Super Smash Bros., Fortnite, Rocket League, Paladins, Pokémon Unite, Mario Kart, and others.
The games’ audio and chat functions are disabled to ensure a positive environment for players.
