What To Do if There Really Is A Tornado in Hillsborough County

On Wednesday, many of Hillsborough residents received a loud warning on our phone that a tornado could touch down. And while Floridians are experts when it comes to hurricanes, tornados are a different story.

Tornadoes can cut across Hillsborough County with little to no warning. These violent whirlwinds can form over land or water, and wind speeds can reach over 200 mph. This is what makes them so deadly.

Here’s what to do next time there’s a tornado warning.

Learn the signs of a tornado in Hillsborough

  • A rotating, funnel-like cloud
  • An approaching cloud of debris
  • A loud roar like a freight train

The sky may also take on a greenish tinge due to potential hail and debris. Also, before the tornado hits you may feel a change in wind pattern followed by a wall cloud which is lowered and often circular extension of a thunderstorm cloud.

Stay safe

  • Go to a safe location, clear of windows
  • Protect yourself by covering your head and neck with your arms, and cover your body with furniture or blankets
  • Do not try to outrun a tornado or seek cover in a vehicle

This is Florida, we don’t have basements or bunkers. The best way to stay safe is to get away from windows! Get to the most interior room and hunker down. You may also try and block any large windows with a mattress.

The aftermath

  • Pay attention to the County’s emergency notification system, HCFL Alert, local authorities, and NOAA Weather Radio updated information.
  • Stay clear of downed power or utility lines
  • During clean up, wear appropriate, protective gear

When it seems safe check on your neighbors.
